The Casa da Musica is a concert hall located in Porto, Portugal design by the Office for Metropolitan Architecture. Completed in 2005, the concrete shell structure contains a primary auditorium with a capacity of 1300 and a secondary recital hall with a capacity of 200. In preperation for a design studio in which students were tasked with developing their own designs for a theater located in Ann Arbor, MI, a case study was conducted in which 1/2”=1’-0” scale section models were constructed of notable performance venues. This exercise was to assist in developing a better understanding of the programming behind theaters including front of house and back of house sapces. It was also an opportunity to research innovative theater design.
