Case Studies in Contemporary Construction

The Leutschenbach School is a primary school located in Zurich, Switzerland that was completed by Christian Kerez in 2009. This case study analyzes the sophisticated integration of structural and mechanical systems that help reinforce the programatic logic of the project. The building is supported by a series of trusses on the lower levels that seperate similar sized classrooms and meet the ground on six centrally located columns. Cantilevered slabs seemlessly enclose radiant floor heating, HVAC systems, window treatments, fire suppression systems, and lighting. This structural system allows for a gymansium, programatically the largest space yet structurally the lightest space, to be on the upper-most level.
