Pavilion

Spring 2015 // University of Cincinnati
Professor: Sean Cottengim

Location: UC, Schneider Quadrangle

The Pavilion is an exercise in building at the human scale. In teams of six, students were asked to design and build a structure that occupied a 4’ x 4’ x 8’ space and addressed human proportion. Final structures are constructed from pine and MDF and occupied Schneider Quadrangle in a grid formation for over a week. As the team’s lead designer I was responsible for developing an aesthetically interesting design that addressed the project’s parameters and able to be constructed with the given materials. Our group experimented with material properties and found that the MDF, a perceivably dense material, could be twisted 45º across the 8’ height of the Pavilion by anchoring it in angled notches. This directed us toward creating a space that could be occupied and experienced from within while apprecieated equally from its exterior. We also ensured that elements directly applicable to users like the benches and the entryway were built to accomodate the human scale.
