Tectonic Study

Summer 2016 // University of Cincinnati
Professor: Melanie Swick

Location: General James Taylor Park, KY

This exercise in tectonic assembly involves the investigation of different methods of making at a variety of building scales: Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large. The program is loosely arranged around the expressed needs of storage and recreation facilities for the park along with a series of pedestrian paths for better circulation. Each study discretely explores solutions to different challenges introduced by the complexity of the site. The park is at the convergence of the Ohio and Licking Rivers within a highly active flood plane and in order to address this there is a levee offset 200’ from the river’s edge, creating challenges with navigating and accessing the site. These four studies show some of the strategies used to negotiate this complex site
