Location: Brooklyn, NY
Size: 19,200 SF

Founded in 1838, the 478 acre Green-Wood Cemetery is a cultural institution for art, history, and nature in the heart of Brooklyn. The new Education and Welcome Center, located at the corner of 5th Ave and 25th St across from the Gothic style main entrance gate to the cemetery, is a space for public programming that expands on the cemetery’s approach to landscape and history. The focal point of the site is the Victorian style Weir Greenhouse, a turn of the previous century, landmarked cast iron and glass building that has been fully restored. Standing proudly on the corner, it serves as a main event space alongside galleries, classrooms, and offices that make up the remainder of the Welcome Center’s program. These additional spaces are arranged in carefully proportioned one and two story massings around an entry courtyard while a large party wall supports a neighboring building to the south along the property line. These elements all form a backdrop to the greenhouse and are clad in an intricately modulated terra cotta facade. The pattern and direction of the various sized panels and baguettes respond to different glazed elements of the building and are articulated to match specific heights of the greenhouse. A deep brown/red finish was chosen to match the brownstone color seen on many homes in the neighborhood. The building’s careful response and interaction with the greenhouse mimics how the new welcome center positions itself alongside the historic cemetery, acting as entry point and place of learning. A great level of care, detail, and coordination was required to align these intricate elements alongside such a historic building.
